Nat Schlesinger was convicted of multiple violations of the law as well as arson in connection with a fire at the clothing factory on December 31, 1998. The fire investigators, Investigator Thomas J. Russo and Fire Marshall Bernard Santangelo, conducted their investigation and concluded that the fire began, or originated, on the third floor of the building, located in the shipping area. After determining the origin of the fire, the search for the cause began. According to Investigator Russo's on-scene inspection of the building and area of origin, there were no appliances, candles, machinery, chemicals, smoking material, or heating units in the area of origin (Schlesinger v. United States, 2012).
