3. A government agency cited a manufacturing company for discrimination since 55% of males applying for a position were hired, and only 42% of the female applicants were hired. The company responded that there were two types of positions open for application, assembly line and management, and that a higher percentage of women were hired at each position: 85% to 75% for the assembly line positions and 20% to 15% for the management positions. Explain what seems to be going on here. (16 points) It can be calculated that two thirds of male applicants applied for assembly line jobs ( which are easier to get ) and one third of male applicants applied for managment jobs ( which are harder to get ) . So , even though the Company hires a greater percentage of women for each type of position, mech are more likely to apply for the jobs that are easy to get and women are more likely to apply for the jobs that are hard to get , and this pattern causes the total percentage of applicants hired to be lower for women, and the company is falsely accused of discrimination
