3B). In a continuous solvent extraction process, 100kgh of raw cotton seeds (stream 1) containing 15 wt %
cellulose, 35 wt% meal and 50 wt% oil is fed to an extractor - separator column. Hexane (stream 2) is
used to selectively extract the oil from the cotton seeds where 3kg Hexane is used per 1kg raw cotton
seed. The oil extraction and product / by-product separation process is shown in the flow diagram
below (Figure 3B).
I. Perform overall mass balance and components mass balances.
II. Calculate the mass flowrate of the oil - hexane extract E(stream 5)
III. Calculate the composition (mass fractions) of the oil - hexane extract E (stream 5)
IV. Calculate the mass flow rates protein meal (stream 3) and the cellulose material (stream 4).
