3. Eriksen Flanker Task

The Eriksen Flanker Task (1974) is a well established measure of the mind's ability to inhibit inappropriate information. In this simple task participants respond with a button press as quickly as they can to indicate the direction (left or right) of the target stimulus (red). Surrounding the Target are congruent or incongruent stimuli (flankers). Researchers measure how quickly participants can respond to the target (Reaction Time). Here are examples of what participants see. The original hypothesis for this type of study is if participants have difficulty filtering out distracting information than their reaction time on Incongruent Trials should be slower than on Congruent Trials.
