3. Nitrification is carried out by autotrophs that utilize ammonium as the electron donor, oxygen as the electron acceptor, ammomium as the nitrogen source, and inorganic carbon as the carbon source. Assume e=0.6. (a) compute fs' and Y (g cells per g NH4-N) for nitrification with ammonium being oxidized to nitrate by normal autotrophic nitrifying bacteria (b) compute the changes to fo and Y if the nitrifying bacteria were able to use acetate as the carbon source, instead of inorganic carbon. (c) A WWTP is using nitrification to oxidize ammonium to nitrate. If the influent contains 30 mg/L ammonium, and the treatment target is 1 mg/L ammonium in the effluent. For nitrifying bacteria in (a) and (b), respectively, calculate how much excess sludge in terms of nitrifiers (kg) would be generated per day to treat 1 MGD (million gallons per day) raw wastewater. (1 gallon = 3.7 L). | III | IV | y V
