3. Three biologically important diatomic species, because they either promote or inhibit life, are CO, NO and CN. The first binds to Hemoglobin, the second is a chemical messenger, and the third interrupts the electron transport chain. Their biochemical action is a reflection of their orbital structure. a. Draw a generic MO diagram for a heteronuclear diatomic (A-B) with two different period 2 atoms considering only the valence shell. Assume that atom A is less electronegative than atom B. The levels of the atomic orbitals should reflect the difference in energies between the two atoms. Assume the order for sigma and pi MOs is that of carbon and nitrogen. Include 2s/2pz mixing in the 1u and 2e MOs. b. Use your MO diagram from part a to determine the ground state configurations for CO, NO and CN. c. What is the bond order for each and which are paramagnetic (radicals)? d. Would any of the molecules become more stable after oxidation or reduction by 1 electron? Why or why not
