6. Sainsbury Foods produces a variety of food products in several facilities across Western Canada. They have been growing and are in search of new information systems to help keep up with their growth and provide more integrated quality information to manage the company. Computing services are largely provided by their office in Vancouver. Some challenges have been experienced in recent times after days of storms caused flooding and mudslides that blocked major highways, rail lines and essentially cut off Vancouver from the rest of the country. The customer base is quite diverse, and with increasing competition, Sainsbury Foods is placing more emphasis on responding to inquiries quickly, buying potential customer lists to find new customers, and looking for ways to sell additional products to each customer to improve revenue and profits. The company is also in the process of converting its static web site so that customers can enter order information online and contact staff with questions about their orders. Sainsbury Foods is considering moving to a cloud-based accounting system. The cloud-based accounting system is from a well-known company. Multiple cloud tenants would be sharing the software from the cloud services provider, though each tenant (customer) would have access to only its own data. Costs are expected to be about $125,000 a year for software for years 2-4, plus one-time costs in the first year of $250,000 for consulting help, testing. training, and data conversion. Sainsbury Foods would use the cloud-based approach for four years and then review its situation. Some savings will be generated by laying off one current IT person paid $50,000 a year starting in year two, who is the CEO's cousin. The IT staff have worked together for a number of years, and generally access all systems with a master account and password shared among the staff so they can cover for each other during vacations.
