A concept is a building block or part of an explanation of the world around us. For this assignment, the focus is on how patients or customers experience care or interact with value-based arrangements described in the text or associated readings. The concept analysis is used to organize and evaluate the sufficiency of evidence or research to support the development of an improved understanding of the concept itself. The concept analysis can also help to set the stage for further exploration, but it is not a literature review. The assignment is a measure of your ability to gather information, analyze it, and think critically about the applications and implications for the future of healthcare delivery.

Background - Often, when talking about a concept, we are talking at the early stages of understanding, so there may not be tons of available information. The concept analysis is not about creating a scholarly paper on the subject but instead identifying the concept, what is linked to it, methods you can use to gather data, attributes of the concept, and other relevant avenues of inquiry. There certainly is writing involved, and you will be exploring the concept in order to achieve clarity on what it is and how it impacts practice. Finally, it is essential to understand that concept analysis is not about building and defining as much as it is about breaking the concept into its pieces and developing understanding through the parts of the whole.

Concept Selection - You will identify a concept related to the reading you've done or of interest to you. Please note that it must be related to Value-based healthcare or value-based purchasing. Examples could include readmission penalties. Students with questions on concept selection should correspond with the course faculty.

Concept Analysis Components:

• Identify the concept
• Answer what it is and why is it important
• What is the background
• Why is it important
• What is the meaning of this concept in healthcare or healthcare delivery organizations
• What is the meaning to your area of practice (current or future) in healthcare? How do you, or your organization, interact with the concept?
• Identify other terms, references, or domains that encompass the concept
• What other terms can be used to refer to the concept under review? For example, empathy could also be viewed as caring or sensitivity.
• Define the other terms quickly
• Draw links to the concept under review
• Explain data collection methods or realms from which perspective may be gained
• Where can you find data on the concept you're reviewing?
• If it has not been fully described in the literature, where would you look?
• What professional or scholarly sources do you turn to?
• What type of data is required to better understand the concept?
• How can you measure the concept?
• Explain the attributes of the concept
• What are the tangible pieces of the concept under review?
• Are there theoretical components that might need to be discussed? What are they?
• Identify and explain the conceptual relatives; what preceded the concept, and what is currently directly related to it
• What theories, processes, etc., are directly related?
• Identify them and explain briefly.
• Explain a model or example of the concept
• If there is some organization or some unit within an organization (your own is okay) where the concept you are focusing on is being modeled?
• Do ur best to find models or examples of the concept and relate them to your concept.
• Explain the impacts of the concept under review
• What is the importance of all that you have uncovered?
• Summarize
• Explain the concept again
• Explain what you have told your reader (quickly)
• Explain why the concept is important
• Review the relationships you identified
• What are your takeaways after your review?
