A good business plan!
Azmain Mahabub and Afia Tasnim have been friends since high school. The basis of their
friendship was food. Azmain had fallen in love with cooking while watching the cooking channel
on TV. He started watching for the attractive female chefs, but started appreciating the cooking
more than the cooks in no time. By the time he entered university Azmain was somewhat of a
culinary expert. Afia on the other hand was a gourmand. She loved food, and she had a discerning
palate, so she knew good food. Theirs was a friendship made in culinary heaven.
They both attended the same university, , and as part of an
entrepreneurship class project opened a food stall during a fair. As expected, Azmain was in charge
of the food, and Afia was in charge of the finances... and tasting of course. The stall did not make
much in profits, mostly because they had to give out a lot of free food to friends and teachers, but
the food was an instant hit. Azmain prepared four different styles of burgers, three different types
of chili fries, and a host of other succulent grilled items. For months the campus was abuzz with
rave reviews and both Azmain and Afia were inundated with requests for more. Neither of the two
though gave much consideration to the idea of continuing in similar vein.
Azmain's father was a retired military official, and wanted his son to secure a good position
in a multinational. He had close friends in top positions in many of these types of companies and
he believed that his son's talent along with his recommendation would make securing such a
position for Azmain rather easy. However, Azmain's CGPA was much lower than the minimum
requirements of many of these places; during his university years he had given most of his attention
to the culinary arts and also a fair amount to the fairer gender, which meant his grades had to suffer
the consequences.

Afia came from a business family, who didn't really have any expectations as such from
Afia, but did have a position secured for her as director of their group of companies. She did not
have much of a passion for anything that she herself was aware of, apart from being an epicure
when it came to good food.
As the date of their graduation neared the two friends started discussing what they might
want to pursue in the future, of course all discussions were had while they nibbled on the exquisite
delicacies that Azmain used to prepare. On this day Azmain was trying a new recipe of neatly
sliced beef tenderloins marinated in an experimental honey, garlic, and herbs-based sauce. He had
hasselback potatoes and sweetcorn on the side. Afia could barely keep her mouth empty enough
to speak. While roasting the meat Azmain shared his dilemma with Afia: he knew he couldn't get
a reasonably good job with his CGPA, and he didn't know what to do. It was then that Afia came
up with the idea of opening a restaurant.
The idea started half as a joke. They started talking about the type of food they could serve,
where the restaurant should be, if they could find enough customers, what the pricing should be,
etc., when it occurred to both that it could actually be a viable solution to both their career woes,
and a very good business. They called on the services of their good friend Trina Saha who was
great with making business plans and also had worked for a few years in sales and marketing and
knew her way around people.
Afia's family had a plot in Banani 11 that had recently been vacated and was available for
low rent. Afia also got her family to agree to 70% of the seed funding for the restaurant, as did
Azmain from his father for the rest 30%. Trina did not have funds to contribute, but she promised
to contribute herself completely in managing the restaurant, including designing all marketing
campaigns. Informally they discussed on splitting the ownership of the restaurant 3 ways, with
Afia and Azmain getting 45% each and Trina getting 10% with an option to buy more in the future.
Everything looked rosy, but there was one small catch. The seed funding from both Afia
and Azmain's families are dependent on the attractiveness of the restaurant's business plan. The
plan has to include a proper analysis of all relevant factors and show clearly how the trio expect to
make it a profitable venture.
Now they need a foolproof business-plan from Trina!
