A horizontal water-heater is required to heat 15000 kg/hr of water from 15 C to 85C by means of steam condensing at 110C. The heater is to consists of tubes having 1.9 cm O.D. and 1.65 cm I.D. Determine the number of tubes required and the length of each tube if the velocity of water inside the tube is not to exceed 0.75 m/sec. Assume counter-flow arrangement and assume steam side heat transfer coefficient as 6700 kcal/hr m C. Latent heat of steam at 110 C is 533 kcal/kg. Take following properties of water certain temperature in your calculation. Tube side fluid is water. Metal wall resistance is neglected. Use dirt fact, RD = 0.0006. Use various required formula which are given in appendix. Also comment on tube length adjustment if your calculated length of the tubes is fairly high u = 1.88 kg/m hr Cp = 1.00 kcal/kg C p = 985 kg/m k 0.37 kcal/hr m C
