A mixture of solids and water (Fresh Feed = Stream 1) is
concentrated by evaporating off some of the water via heating in
an evaporator unit. Two streams leave the evaporator - a pure
water vapor stream (Evap = Stream 2) and a highly concentrated
solids and water mixture (High Conc = Stream 3). For product
quality reasons, some of the fresh feed to the system bypasses
the evaporator (Bypass = Stream 4) and is mixed with the highly
concentrated stream leaving the evaporator to create the final
"concentrate" effluent product (Product = Stream 5). The stream
entering the evaporator after the bypass has been split off is the
Evaporator Feed = Stream 6. To enrich the feed from 10.5% solids to 56% solids in the stream
leaving the evaporator (Stream 3) and ultimately to 32% solids in
the final product stream (Stream 5), what fraction of the fresh
feed should be diverted through the bypass stream? Answer as a
fraction, not as a %.
