A plaintiff hires an attorney to pursue a tort cause of action against a defendant. The plaintiff receives a satisfactory award of damages after pretrial mediation of the case. The plaintiff forwards to the attorney the entire amount due for services rendered by the attorney up front through obtaining the award following that final event of their attorney-client relationship; a state agency contacts the attorney. The agency requests that the attorney complete and return a detailed financial disclosure form regarding the mediation award. When the attorney notifies the plaintiff of the agency's request, the plaintiff directs that attorney not to comply with it. State law does not require the completion of the form by the attorney. Will it be proper for the attorney to fill out and return the form to the agency?
