A telecommunication company received 8 new staff during new staff recruitment process. The CEO asks the department director to assign the new staff (Adam, Shawn, Harry, Mike, Alice, Wonda, Farah and Sarah) to eight rooms (room number 1-8 in Fig. 1) in HOD building, level 4.

  1. Assuming there is no assignment restriction for the new staff and rooms, how many possible staffs-to-rooms assignments that can be evaluated?

Based on the requirement set by the director, these information and requests need to be considered by the lab coordinator:

Rooms 1, 4, 5, and 8 are the only rooms with windows.

Adam must be assigned to Room 1.

Mike and Alice, must accommodate rooms with windows.

Sarah must be directly across the walkway from Mike for easy communication.

Adam, Farah, and Sarah must be in the same wing.

Wonda must not be next to Mike or Farah directly across from Farah

  1. Find the optimal assignment of new staff to rooms that meets all the requests of the director and minimize the staff movement flow cost. You must present the calculation of the flow cost for at least two room assignments.
