A vertical cylindrical settler separator is to be designed for separating a mixture flowing at Q=30m/h and a containing equal volumes of a light hydrocarbon liquid (PB = 875 kg/m) and a dilute solution of wash water (PA= 1000 kg/m). Ideal laboratory experiments indicate a settling time of 20min is needed to adequately separate the two phases. Assume that the tank is a cylindrical vessel with a diameter equals 1.5times its height, and that 1/4th of the vessel volume is vapor space vented to the atmosphere. Use the notation given in accompanying Figure. (a) For design purposes use a 30min settling time and calculate the 2-phase liquid volume ! (b) What is the vessel volume and the dimensions (D and H) ! (c) What is the height of the vapor hvap in this case ? (d) Based on hydrostatic principle give the relationship between the liquid levels of the light and heavy liquids hb, hal, and the adjustable height h^2 of the heavy liquid overflow. (e) At what level h^2 the decanter is operated if the light liquid height is to be maintained at 30% of H ? (f) In case the light liquid stream reveals the presence of significant amounts of heavy phase what conclusion would you draw ? (Bonus !) vent feed light liquid B overflow liquid B liquid A heavy liquid A overflow- FIGURE 2.2-6. Continuous atmospheric gravity separator for immiscible liquids
