According to Jung, the human psyche has conscious and unconscious aspects, and he believed that the elements of the collective unconscious can be discerned through archetypal images and complexes (Douglas, 2019). Additionally, Jungian therapy involves getting to know the unconscious mind, which he believed significantly impacts people's behaviour and thoughts. In his theory, art is significant in helping individuals access and understand their unconscious minds. By understanding and expressing oneself through art, an individual can better understand the psyche and inner self (Swan-Foster, 2020). For Jung, imagining and creating early experiences played a crucial role in healing the unconscious. Jung's therapy often uses art and myth to help patients communicate their deepest feelings, thoughts, and beliefs (Swan-Foster, 2020).
Jung also places importance on music therapy as a therapeutic tool that is also viewed as having a symbol-making function in that the physical act of making music involves conceptualizing one's symptoms into sounds (McClary, 2007). Through the physical act of making music, music has the potential to heal the body (McClary, 2007). As a result of the physicality of making music, blocked feelings can be released, and repressed memories can be accessed (McClary, 2007). The discharge and release of conscious and unconscious feelings can be observed when a musical instrument expresses the self through physical action (McClary, 2007).
Is art and music therapy a good option for everyone? Or may some people not prefer it? In which cases do you think clients will not prefer it?
