In the Workplace: More Than Two Ways SITUATION The community college business club held its first annual flea market in the fall. Despite hard work and much planning, the results were turning out to be disappointing. It was an indoor event, but customers wanted to be outdoors on what turned out to be a beautiful autumn day. Also, a similar event was being held nearby-out in the open. Around lunchtime, the club members met to decide how to salvage the day. One member suggested giving the participants back their table space rental money and taking only 10 percent of their sales, rather than both, as contracted. Someone else suggested the opposite: just keep their rental money, but don't ask for a percentage. Then members took sides on those two approaches and argued. After 20 minutes, the members with the louder voices and greater persuasive ability won. The club then announced to each of the participants that they wouldn't be asked to pay the percentage. "What happened to creative problem solving?" she asked. "You've made the old mistake of choosing from two alternatives, while ignoring other creative possibilities." Earlier, the adviser had polled the participants. Only 12 of the 40 had been seriously unhappy with the sales they had made. With a little creativity, you could have come up with a solution to make everyone happy and still realize a nice profit. I hope you've all learned a lesson from this," she exclaimed.
