After volunteering for a few events in your first year at Sheridan, you were able to get to know some people in the SSU and were encouraged to apply for the position. Now you are in your section year and so happy that you will be able to gain Office Administration-related experience working at the SSU.

You learn that there is a team of 8 people working in the SSU office. The President, Harshveer, a student in the BBA program, yourself as Vice President, Jamal, the Treasurer, and 5 others on the team (Kaily, Parminder, Sarah, Amira, and Freddo).

Your SSU team meets once a week to discuss issues and events you are planning. You all decide that the first event will be a Halloween Dance Party at the Den. You offer to create the posters for the event, given your Desktop Publishing skills, but Kaily and Parminder jump in and say that they would like to be in charge of this. Instead, you take on the task of contacting the staff at the Den, booking the event, and making notes of all the details for the posters. Once you have everything in place, you loop back to Kaily and Parminder to share your research, in order for them to include these event details on the posters.

To your surprise, they say that they have already created the posters, ordered them from the print shop and paid IN FULL... to the tune of $500! When the posters arrive, you are very alarmed. So much of the information is incorrect. It says the event is on October 30th, but the date you booked is the 31st. It says the event is free, but you were planning on selling tickets for $20 each to pay for the rental of the Den. It also says there will be costume prizes of $200, $100, and $50, but you are worried that there will be no money to pay for this.

You are so shocked that you don't even know what to do. Just when you think the situation is bad enough, Jamal, the Treasurer, learns about the situation and begins yelling at everyone for making bad decisions and wasting money!

Q1 - What is the major problem in this case? What are other problems?

Q2 - What would you recommend that the SSU team do in order to resolve this situation? Is there a way to salvage this event, and keep harmony in the team?

Q3 - What would be the best approach to provide feedback to your peers, Kaily and Parminder, in a constructive and non-offensive way?

Q4 - Describe how your conflict management skills can be employed to sort through this situation - what conflict management strategy or strategies could be used?

Q5 - Looking ahead, what team facilitation strategies could your team leader, the President Harshveer, use to ensure that this type of situation does not arise again in the future?
