Predatory pricing affects everyone no matter where they live. The one thing that always comes to mind on this topic is that of grocery stores. We have all lived somewhere with grocery stores that always compete even on the most miniscule level. Specifically, HEB in San Antonio has lately raised my eyebrows regarding how they came into the market. In prior places which I have lived, there was always more than one grocery store to shop from. When I got the San Antonio, all I saw was HEB and I always wondered why. It turns out that there was an issue with predatory pricing with HEB. When Albertson's and other Kroger stores moved in to the area, HEB took one look and decided to close their stores down for one day and drop the prices of all their items and made a new "everyday discount price" that was lower than all the other stores in the area. They saw results immediately. The federal Trade Commission investigated HEB for predatory pricing but determined that there was no violation of the Sherman Act since they were pricing based on competitive factors alone. The article is from Texas Monthly from 1988 but it is a good read.
The topic of fairness continues to be hotly debated especially about compensation between the sexes. It all comes down to how you present yourself in relation to how much research you have done about the position or the role within the company. I can say that the more research you do about a role has a direct relation to how you should "ask for the job, and compensation" at the conclusion of the interview. I can say, that this does not exist in the military, which is a good thing. Regardless of sex, an E6 under 8 years active, gets paid the exact same base pay. I believe that more companies should adopt this structure in their workforce. In the civilian sector, it is frowned upon to talk about how much we make with others. In the military, it is already known and one can even find the pay tables on the internet when they are updated each year. (Matthew)
