Ahmad and Wei Hong are two UTM Chemical Engineering students who are in their second week of a total 10-week internship in ChemChamp Sdn. Bhd. ChemChamp Sdn. Bhd. is a large scale petrochemical based industry located in Pasir Gudang. They produce several chemical products including sulfuric acid and chlorine for commodity use to be used locally and for export. Ahamd and Wei Hong were very welcomed by the company, especially by the General Manager, Mr. Farid Abu. The General Manager always told the students to learn as much as possible during their internship period and to refer to him if there are any problems encountered. All the staff in the company, especially those in the Quality Control (QC) Lab, was very friendly to both of them, and treat them like their younger brothers. Ahmad and Wei Hong have just completed their Project Sarjana Muda I (PSM I), in which the project requires them to develop mathematical model for the whole process in order to optimize the productivity and increase the efficiency of the process control system. For this, they need to collect data on the quality of the final products as well as the wastewater from the treatment plant. But they noticed that the data is somehow suspicious. When they studied and analysed in detail, it seems that the data was not collected or sampled at all by the operators because all the values recorded for the previous months are almost the same. In fact, the recorded data seems like they were values simply written on the data recording sheet and claimed it as the actual monitoring data. Their suspicions were confirmed when they took their own samples and made their own tests on the samples and obtained different results from those recorded. The data on the final products specification was given to the clients upon request, while the data on the wastewater was given to the Department of Environment (DoE) during the annual environmental audit. Ahmad and Wei Hong felt worried about the discrepancies that they see in the data. What should they do regarding this matter? Should they inform this to the General Manager? However, they felt bad doing it as they are very close to the plant operators and those in the QC Lab. And they also need to maintain good future relationship with the operators for their PSM II project. If you were Ahmad and Wei Hong, what would you do?
