AI has ushered in a new era of possibilities.

Once confined to complex, industrial applications, AI is now becoming part of our everyday activities. Recent advances in AI-generated art and text have created many possibilities. Although the technology cannot fully replace humans yet, improvements are so rapid that we can expect a dramatic transformation of work in the near future. The challenge for organizations will be to harness AIs capabilities while countering its negative, unintended consequences.

This post is intended to help students discover their potential as design and manufacturing engineers with ChatGPT, DALL-E, and Midjourney.

1. Think of a new product idea and use DALL-E or Midjourney to create a picture/drawing of it (e.g., kitchen robot with hands and eyes). What do you think of the results? Could they be helpful to design engineers? Explain.

2. Use ChatGPT and ask to create a list of the material resources needed to manufacture the product you created in Question 1. Describe what you would change or add to the list. Next, ask ChatGPT to create a complete list of all the material resources needed to manufacture the product selected in Question 1. Was there an improvement? How could you revise the wording of your chat to generate an even better list?
