Carbon Manufacturing is looking for employees in all departments. High pay, benefits, no union dues. Apply at the personnel department. Knowing that the Carbon plant was a union shop and that a strike was under way, you figured this was a temporary position with no future. Then a friend informed you that he had applied, and was told that the company planned to replace the union strikers permanently. He explained that the pay was at current union levels and benefit were pretty good. The only catch was that the company expected you never to join a union. Because you need a job, this all sounds very interesting. However, you are bothered by the prospect of being a scab, and also by the nonunion clause. Your father was a strong union man, and taught you about the good that unions have done for working Americans. Before unions existed, the pay was low, hours long, benefits few, and there was
