This part of your paper must identify one of the 4 levels of court found in your online Lesson 6. Describe the functions of that level of court in relation to CRIMINAL cases. What is its legal jurisdiction? What types of cases and offences does it hear? Is it strictly a trial court, an appeal court, or both? Identify: i) the laws that were being dealt with while you there (Identify the Legislation, Name of Offence and Section # of the charges being dealt with) ii) the major participants dealing with the case(s) in the courtroom (i.e., their positions; the names of the participants other than the judge are not required. You must provide the judge's name.) iii) the stage of processing of the case(s) you observed, e.g., was it a bail hearing, evidence being presented at trial, sentencing, appeal, other? You must include how you knew it was at that stage, i.e., what was going on that indicated that stage? If possible, focus your discussion on one offence/case in particular. iv) the next stage the case(s) would likely progress to. If possible, focus your discussion on one offence/case in particular. Identify a principle of the rule of law (as per your online Module 1) that was adhered to in the proceedings you observed. Explain: a) what that principle means, and b) how that principle applied at the case you observed. This part of your paper should be no less than page in length. DO NOT SELECT ALL CITIZENS ARE SUBJECT TO LAW; that principle is considered a given for the purposes of this assignment. Identify a specific section or sub-section of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms that relates to the case. Explain: a) what that Right means, and b) how that Right applied at the case you observed. This part of your paper should be no less than page in length.
