Section B Candidates should answer ONE question from Section B. 5. Heather and her father John visit CompuCity to shop for a laptop and printer, both for their own personal use. John has promised Heather that he will buy the laptop for her if he can get a good price. Heather has explained to him that the laptop must be compatible with software she uses to create birthday cards, which is her hobby. Heather wants to buy her father a new printer that only requires two printer cartridges, as his current printer uses four and he is always complaining about how expensive this is. She has been saving up for the printer and can afford to spend up to 150. Heather approaches a sales assistant, and tells him of her need for a printer that uses less cartridges than her father's current one. The sales assistant shows her a printer he says requires only two cartridges, and tells Heather it has been reduced to 105. Heather is delighted with this deal, and pays for the printer on her credit card. John has been comparing laptops with another sales assistant, and has been shown one costing 250. John is extremely pleased with this price, expecting to have to pay far more. He pays for the laptop in cash. When Heather gets home, she opens the printer box and discovers to her dismay that the printer needs four printer cartridges. Meanwhile John has been setting up the laptop. It appears to be working perfectly until he tries to load Heather's card- making software, at which point the new laptop crashes. When Heather asks her father whether he checked with the sales assistant if the laptop would be compatible with her card-making software he admits that, in his excitement at having secured a good deal, he had forgotten to mention it. The next day Heather and John take the printer and the laptop back to CompuCity and ask for a refund on both. The manager tells Heather and her father that they cannot get a refund on the printer or the laptop, as there is no fault with either of them. Advise Heather and John whether they have any grounds in UK law to secure a refund for their purchases. In your answer you should cite the relevant sections of any legislation you refer to. 6. The PC you bought for your business three months ago from CompuCity for 1,000 has stopped working. You no longer have the receipt for the purchase but you do have your business credit card statement showing the purchase was made at that time, for that amount of money, from the store. What rights do you have under UK law to a refund, repair or replacement PC
