The yearly demand for widgets is 48,000 units. Assume sales are consistently 4,000 widgets/month, inventory holding costs are 25%, and backorder costs are $120/ widget. Holding costs are calculated using the value of the widgets in inventory (landed cost) at the end of each month. Backorder costs are calculated at the end of the month based on the number of sales that cannot be filled by inventory or orders received in the current month. There are currently 12,000 widgets in inventory at an average cost of $38/ unit. WSW uses inventory because the company aims for zero backorders. WSW has a contract with a third-party logistics company which includes the following rates. These are only paid by WSW if the costs are not already included in the supplier's quoted price. All widgets are containerized for shipment. Up to 4,000 widgets can be loaded into a 20ft container, and up to 8,000 widgets can be loaded into a 40ft container. 3c. To meet the yearly demand, what is the minimum total cost for the widgets if using Tortoise Manufacturing for the period of January to December 2023? Hint: Include costs of all widgets sold in 2023 (including those in inventory on Jan 1, 2023), holding costs, and backorder costs. Exclude costs of widgets that remain in inventory at the end of 2023. 4a. Which supplier proposal carries the least amount of risk for WSW? Why? 4b. Which supplier would you recommend and why? List any other issues and transportation costs that may influence the decision. 2c. What is your proposed order schedule (order date(s) and quantities ordered) to minimize overall costs and achieve zero backorders for the period of January to December 2023 if ordering from Tortoise Manufacturing?
