Applications of Spectroscopy Nitrite ion, NO2, is a preservative for bacon and other foods, but it is potentially carcinogenic. It can be analyzed via UV-Vis spectroscopy as it reacts with sulfanilic acid and 1-Aminonaphthalene to form a colored complex that has a imax of 520 nm. See the scheme below: HOS -NH, + NO + 2H+ Sulfanilic acid HO, -NEN+ 2H,0 HO, -NEN+ NH, 8 1-Aminonaphthalene HOS NEN Colored product. - 520 mm -NH, + H+ To prepare the colored complex and then analyze using UV-Vis spectroscopy, the follow procedure was done: 1. To 50.0 ml of unknown solution containing nitrite, 1.00 ml of sulfanilic acid is added. 2. After 10 min, 2.00 ml of 1-aminonaphthalene solution and 1.00 ml of buffer are added. 3. After 15 min, the absorbance is read at 520 nm in a cuvette with a pathlength of 1.00 cm. Given below are the results of the analysis of 3 solutions. Solution A: sample taken from 50.0 ml of food extract known to contain no nitrite had an absorbance value of 0.153. Note this solution is the blank Solution B: sample taken from a solution of food extract containing a known amount of nitrite. This solution was prepared by adding 1.00 mL of 7.50 x 10--M NO2- to food extract in a 50.0 ml volumetric flask; final absorbance of this sample = 0.967. Solution C: sample taken from a 50.0 ml solution of food extract containing an unknown amount of nitrite. Final absorbance = 0.622. a. Determine the color of the colored complex, explain your choice of color. b. Calculate the percent transmittance of solution B. c. Calculate the concentration in mol/L of nitrite in solution d. Determine the concentration of nitrite in solution C in mol/L
