Applying Leadership Skills in Exploring the Roles for AP
Servant leadership is a philosophy rooted in the idea that effective leaders prioritize serving others over seeking power or authority. Leaders who advocate for this approach according to White (2022) are focused on empowering and raising the self-esteem of their employees, associates, clients, community, or other stakeholders. Their sole aim is to improve their welfare, growth, and development both at career and individual levels. These kinds of leaders are often known to possess empathy, humility, and compassion to serve the broader good rather than their interests. In addition to being active listeners of their team members, servant leaders often strive to create a supportive environment, promoting collaboration and ensuring inclusiveness within an organization (Canavesi & Minelli, 2021).
In my future role as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN), particularly as a Clinician, I would embody servant leadership by placing the needs of my patients at the forefront of my practice. Guided by Specchia et al. (2021) work, I intend to create an environment that is conducive for healing and which is all inclusive, where patients feel valued, respected and heard. My aim would be to empower them in their own journey of care by actively listening to them, involving them in decision-making processes and being their advocates. In addition, I would support other healthcare providers and recognize the key contribution of collaboration among the interdisciplinary in delivering quality healthcare.
Reflecting on my experience working as a nurse at Medicare Hospital, I remember one of our nurse leader who demonstrated servant leadership in all her daily interactions. She would always find time for her fellow nurses regardless of her tight schedule including mentoring them and offering much needed advice. She always put the needs of her team members first by facilitating their career progression by providing the necessary resources, support and ensuring that they were well equipped to succeed. Her selfless commitment to serve developed an atmosphere where everyone felt appreciated and empowered to contribute towards the success of the team. In adopting this approach she not only promoted trust and collaboration but also inspired us to emulate her example of compassion and generosity.
