Are the principles of persuasion different in today's online environment? Why or why not?
I do not think that persuasion online is not all that different now based on principles of persuasion that Cialdini is talking about. I do have to agree with him in the video when he says that learning these principles is not hard, it is knowing how and when to use them. Reciprocity, Commitment, Social Proof, Authority, Scarcity....but what really stood out to me was Liking. The more you show interest in someone, the more likely you will be to persuade them. The online world we live in today makes everyone far more connected than ever before. The focus on communication, culture, and media is overwhelming at times, but you can look at any of these principles and see how they play out on the web today. When I think of what Cialdini was speaking about and what we read in our chapter for this week, what really tied both of these together for me was the idea of mass interpersonal persuasion or " the ability of individuals to change attitudes and behaviors on a mass scale" (Wahl, Morris. 2018. p 121). If people like something or someone online, the influence it can have to change people's perspectives is enormous. It is in the videos, the articles, the imagery that we see that helps persuade people on certain topics.
