As a practicing professional, I have yet to work on a strictly agile project unless the project was very small, had only a single user group from which to gather requirements, and the scope was very limited. Several fellow technology professionals have shared similar stories.

A great way to use the waterfall method is to ensure that the project milestones and deliverables are mapped to the requirements. This mapping can provide the development team with an idea of the larger milestones that must be met, while showing the developers smaller chunks of development work that can be done using the agile methodology. As an example, one CRM project I worked involved 6 different functional areas. All areas had to be implemented in a seamless manner where the data could flow between them correctly. The agile developers were able to focus on each functional area (there were 6 different teams of agile developers) but still adhere to the higher-level waterfall plan.
