As project manager of a project team, your project team has been asked to design and equip the fitness center with the appropriate athletic training equipment, technology, and aesthetic appeal that would make it a world-class fitness center. While your team will not be responsible for constructing the 150' x 300' fitness center, you will provide input to the architects as some of your equipment and the reception area will require electricity. Other considerations could include lighting, mirrors, particular flooring, water fountains, etc. Similarly, since Google is a technology company, they want this to be a state-of-the-art facility with digital signage, many televisions, Wi-Fi, music, etc. In addition, they are asking for your team's input on a color scheme and other design cues that will connect with the local community. Your team will also need to specify the exercise equipment to purchase and determine the floor layout of the equipment in the open-concept facility while ensuring that you comply with minimum aisle spacing per OSHA safety standards. Finally, they would like your team to oversee the completed facility's procurement, installation, and final testing. Remember that Google strongly desires to purchase products and services from local companies and encourages project teams to partner with local businesses when possible.

Note that locker rooms will be attached to the fitness center, but another project team is handling that portion of the project. Similarly, your team will not be addressing staffing the fitness center or other operational concerns such as advertising, membership packages, liability insurance, etc.

Your team has met with the project sponsor and key stakeholders at Google to discuss the project's scope further. The goal of this meeting was to ensure that your project team and Google are now in agreement on your areas of responsibility. Your notes from the meeting included the following:

1. Provide input to the architectural firm to include the following:

a. Floor layout diagram that shows the placement of all exercise equipment, reception desk, lounge, and all other furnishings.

b. Placement of all technology devices to include required cabling (power and communications).

c. Design cues to include flooring type, wall/ceiling color, decorations, and designs that will connect with the local community.

2. Procurement Management

a. Design and specify all exercise equipment and furnishings to be ordered.

b. Design and specify all technology to be ordered.

c. Procure all exercise equipment, furnishings, and technology while working with local suppliers when possible. d. Arrange for shipping/storage location of ordered materials.

3. Installation Management

a. Coordinate and oversee the installation of all exercise equipment, furnishings, and technology.

b. Testing of all installed technology to ensure all items are functional.

c. Training of Fitness Center staff on the use of all installed technology. d. Ensure all standards have been met to obtain a certificate of occupancy from Clarksville.

Google has asked that you provide them with a "scope statement." The scope statement will ensure that both parties agree on the project requirements and deliverables and the acceptance criteria that will be used to transfer ownership of the project upon completion. The scope statement will serve as a mechanism to control scope throughout the project's lifecycle and eliminate confusion on what the project team is and is not responsible for producing.
