Melbourne Business School Department of Management & Marketing MGMT90140 Management Competencies Assignment #3 FAQs Do we have to stick to the two competency areas identified as priorities in Assignment 1? The objective of assignment 1 was to help you set personal objectives. We understand you may have decided to focus on other areas as we introduced more fully each of the competency areas. We want you to reflect on areas you have actively worked to improve this semester and identify next steps that are most relevant to you in your self- improvement journey. If they are not the ones identified in assignment 1, it is fine. It is all about you critically reflecting on what you have done this semester, the insights you have gained, the progress you have made and you identifying suitable next steps for further development. Ultimately, we are testing your knowledge of class material (theory integration counts towards 30% of your mark in this assignment) but we want this reflective essay to be helpful to you. Do we need an introduction and conclusion for the assessment? The reflection report would benefit from a short introduction and conclusion. Can we use tables in support of our reflection and discussion of next steps? Will they count towards the word count? You can use tables. They will not be included in the word count. However, you need to make sure that you are not overusing them - be judicious as to which ones to include and use them as a support not as a substitute. Using one to provide concrete illustrations of steps/strategies you have introduced/discussed in the core of your text would be fine for example. How should we cite class material? You don\'t have to cite the slides from class. You simply need to explicitly name the frameworks, theories and ideas from class you\'re using (e.g. drawing on the 4D communication framework, I realised I have a tendency to neglect relational statements and thus worked to....In particular, etc). We need you to use in-text citations, e.g. (Hackman, 2009), if you drew a particular insight from one of the required readings or any additional readings you may have done as part of your self-improvement journey. You also need to reference these at the end of your essay, following APA guidelines for referencing. The list of reference and in-text citations are excluded from the word count. Are headings and in-text citations included in the word count? Headings are included (keep them short and sweet if you use them). In-text citations (e.g. (Pfeffer, 2010)) are exceptionally not included in the word count. As a manager, it is essential to recognize that great leadership starts with self-awareness. This means understanding your strengths, weaknesses, skills, and abilities. Without this knowledge, it is impossible to understand others effectively. In fact, a survey conducted by the Stanford Graduate School of Business Advisory Council found that self-awareness is the most critical capability for leaders to develop.

METHODOLOGY:

This analysis was done based on a questionnaire which is distributed among people who has close relationships with me.To get a comprehensive understanding of my strenghts and weaknesses 2 participants were chosen. Each participant represents two different aspects of my life: college and family. Furthermore, to avoid confusion, score weight technique was used to recieve unbiased results. The score weight for each statement ranged from 0-5, where 0 was given to strongly disagree and 5 to strongly agree.

Key Assessment Results:

This paper aims at assessing my management competencies, evaluating and analyzing my strenghts and weakness, so that I can gain deeper understanding of the leadership skills that I need to acknowlwedge and cultivate. Based on the analysis, overall it seems I have almost about 85% of my competencies, however, I myself never really acknowledged them but my family and friends have. In this study, I found out two areas in which I am more competent and two with less proficient.

Strong Areas:

FIGURE 1 According to the analysis, Change Management & collaboration and teamwork are two competencies that all 2 participants believe I possess. The reason are as follows: Akriti and I have been best friends for the last 4 years. We have worked on multiple college projects together and have been a part of the same college committee for 3 years during under graduation. She has seen me be supportive and open to change that enables improvement and progress, building long lasting contacts and opportunities for myself. Additionally, at that particular time she also witnessed some collaboration and team work skills in me as I used to be precise about being organized and meeting the deadlines. Prabhat Mishra is my brother and has known me for 20 years now. He runs his own business and fortunately I was of some help to him when I was able to explain some of his reasons for a change effort, and its expected outcomes and benefits to some of his potential customers. I believe my brother has seen my collaboration and team work skills at home as I always like to decide everything important to us all together as a family by taking everybodys opinions and thoughts. I completely agree with him, because as an individual, having a competency of collaboration and teamwork will assist me to be able to work effectively with others, even if I am not in a formal leadership position.

Weakness Analysis:

FIGURE 2 Conflict management and Networking seems to be weakness Akriti, Prabhat and I believe I possess. During my under graduation, having plenty of friends, aware of my inability to bring up issues, made life easy. During group projects, Id either have a friend communicate an issue or Id choose to stay quiet. Similarly, while helping my brother, Id find it difficult to communicate work or any other issues through him or settle down with the structure laid down for me. Simultaneously, I am fully aware that networking has been a huge task for me. I\'ve had trouble approaching people since moving to Australia. I avoid participating in class activities and networking gatherings. I\'ve noticed a spike in self-doubt, which makes simple tasks like carrying on a conversation challenging. However, I find it simple to communicate with those that value, embrace, and validate my thoughts and to express my viewpoints. Moving ahead, while discussing and taking some insights from my learning buddy Darshan, he also noticed this trait of mine that I tend to back off from socialzing with people in the given moment and would rather have him say things that I have been wanting to say, which somehow acts as an barrier for me and the people around me to communicate. For the purpose of this paper and to improve my overall competencies, the two shortcomings I shall be focusing on for my self improvement are Conflict Management and Networking.

Evaluation- Conflict Management:

Being an inherent human condition, conflict is inevitable at workplaces and, inescapable aspect of managers job.( McKibben, 2017). Conflict is a natural process in an organization between two or more people( Chan et al., 2007). One fourth of a managers time at the organization is consumed in dealing with conflicts.( Schermerhorn, Hunt, & Osborn, 1988; Thomas & Schmidt, 1976). additionally, during conflict situations, if employees percieve themselves being valued and respected by their seniors, trustworthy relationships will emerge increasing team and organizational effectiveness.( Chan et al., 2007). I believe conflict management is an important competency for me to develop, as it will help me cultivate vital skills for both personal and professional growth.

Competence Development Plan:

According to research, building trust within a team and using effective communication techniques during times of conflict can improve attitudes, performance, and interactions between supervisors and subordinates in an organization.( Adu et al., 2016). Effective communication and teamwork are the two qualities I will be emphasising in order to address and overcome conflicts. Using this action plan, I can better handle disagreements in my current group projects for college. Additionally, steadily developing and honing these skills will give me the assurance I need to approach and handle conflict in an organization. FIGURE 3 Relational Management adapted from Gottmans principles to making marriage work is also really beneficial to understand what to avoid and what to doing during conflicts and clashes in opinions in business environment and would further guide me to grow as an working individual.

Evaluation - Networking:

Networks are not gained, they are earned. I am an introvert and do not feel comfortable with people I meet for the first time. I start to wonder how the other person will judge me or whether I am presentable enough to deliever my thoughts to the person accurately. I am not a coversation starter, which creates a impression of ego infront of other people. Not being able to make people understand my points sometimes acts as an barrier in the thought process and cause misunderstandings. My natural tendency is homophily which is to connect to people who have similar persperctive, age, thereby, minimizing my access to different resources. It is crucial for all managers to build good working relationships with the people who can help them do their jobs. This kind of networking aims to facilitate coordination and cooperation among those who need to be acquainted and trusted in order to complete their urgent tasks.

Competence Development Plan:

Networking is the competence which I think is the core for me to reflect on my strength and weakness and make a progress on improving myself. This is something even my associates agree upon. I feel that succeeding in this competency, by setting reasonable expectations to managing my inner critic will boost my confidence to tackle the hurdles which I would face in the future. Shinning in this will help me conquer most of my desires. From what I learned in the classes, I determined that I could do the following to get around my networking obstacles::
  • Get out of my comfort zone(less homophily)
  • Meet more individuals in different contexts and environments(e.g. lunch, conferences)
  • Focus on relationship quality(not quantity)
Other than that, as a start I have already enrolled myself in business school which would help me build up the network. To further advance my skills, Darshan my learning buddy suggested joining university clubs, attending professional conferences, making nonverbal communication, stepping out from comfort zone, taking up volunteering will help me improve in this aspect. FIGURE 4 CONCLUSION: Keeping this plan as my starting point I will add activities as situation demands to improve my competence. I will be certain with developing the competencies that I have selected and execute with high degree of commitment. FIGURE 5 References Ackerman, Courtney E., and Tiffany Sauber Millacci.
