Azadeh, aged 11, was brought into the emergency room by ambulance from her school when the teacher noticed a rash over her face, arms and legs, as well as laboured breathing. While being transported to the hospital the school was able to contact Azadeh's father (Mahnaz) who arrived while the doctors were conducting their examination. The doctors have told Mahnaz that Azadeh is suffering from a rare blood disease and needs intensive dialysis treatment and medication. Mahnaz is an animal rights activist and is against all medical treatment as it uses animal testing. Mahnaz has informed the doctors that he will not allow the treatment as he believes that Azadeh can be healed using plant based homeopathic remedies instead. The doctors have explained the risks to both Mahnaz and Azadeh, that unless she gets the treatment she will suffer significant pain and then die. Azadeh, who is a very bright and articulate child who loves animals herself, explained that she does not want to benefit from anything which hurt animals and also rejected the treatment.
