b) A blast furnace produces pig iron of the following composition (weight %); Fe = 94%, Si = 2%, C = 3.5% and Mn = 0.5%, by reduction smelting of iron ore, coke and limestone. The raw material analyses are as follows; Iron ore (weight %): Fe2O3 =75%, SiO2 = 10%, MnO = 2%, Al2O3-5%, HO=8% Coke (weight %): C=86%, SiO2 =10%, Al2O3 =4%, the coke rate is 800kg/ton of pig iron. Flux (weight %): CaCO3 = 100%. The CaCO3 produces a slag with 42% CaO During smelting 99% of iron is reduced. Using a basis of 1000kg of pig iron, calculate; (i) Weight of iron ore. (ii) Weight of slag and percentage composition of slag. (iii) Percentage of total SiO2 and MnO reduced in the furnace. [2] [6] [2]
