Background: This homework is based on the semester project. In this assignment, you will design some aspects of the user interface for the system. This assignment assumes that you will be developing the software in-house or outsourcing. If you chose to purchase pre-packaged software as your acquisition strategy for the project, you can either submit documents corresponding to what the pre-existing software actually looks like, or else design your own interface as what you would hope the pre-packaged software would look like if you were able to design it.
Part 1: Interface Structure Diagram Using Figure 9-10 (p. 278 in 6th edition; Figure 9-7 on p. 326 in 5th edition) and lecture material as examples, create an interface structure diagram for the project. There is no correct answer for how the interface should be organized. You may or may not have a home screen, a calendar page, etc. Think about what you would want the system to look like in order to be usable and follow the design guidelines from Chapter 9. Think about all the different functional requirements of the system and make sure the user has a way to navigate to screens to perform each of these functions. You can use Visio or any other tool to create the diagram (see submission instructions below).
Part 2: Example interface There are many design tools used in practice to design user interfaces. Some well-known products are Adobe Fireworks and Microsoft Visual Studio. However, there are also some free online tools for beginners to play around with. These include: moqups.com* (my favorite of the free tools), the Pencil Project, foreui.com, framebox.org, and invisionapp.com. These tools allow you to create wireframe diagrams and/or simple prototypes. Use any of these or another tool (see submission instructions below) to design a single wireframe diagram OR prototype to demonstrate what ONE of the screens in the system might look like. Be creative and have fun. Its OK to keep it simple (in fact, that is a good design principle!). *If you use moqups.com, youll need to take a screenshot, or take a picture with your phone, or share a public link with me to your work. You wont be able to directly export your work to a PDF or PNG using the free version. Email me if you have questions about this tool. Part 3: Rate ISDs and interfaces on design principles Next week, you will do a short exercise where we will look at examples of each others submissions anonymously, and rate them based on the design principles were learning about. Instructions will be provided separately.
(Part 3 is worth points, too, even though it happens separately.) (continued on next page) Formatting and submission instructions: (PLEASE READ CAREFULLY) When you have completed both the ISD and the interface, copy and paste them into a single document (PDF or Word). Do not write your name or team name anywhere inside the document. When you submit on TITANium, Ill be able to know your submission is yours, but it needs to be anonymous so we can rate each others work. If you put your name on the document, your peers will see your work with your name when we rate them next week. To recap, please submit Part 1 and Part 2 in a single document on TITANium before the due date. After the due date, we will complete Part 3.
