Bar-Fly is a popular bar and night club operating in Eastern Canada. Although most of its staff members are trained to diffuse hostility and aggression among patrons, fights do occasionally occur. At least one bouncer is on duty at all times to handle such situations. Sam Shearer, a local college business student, visits Bar-Fly one night after his Business Law class with several of his friends. Even though Sam and his friends stick to themselves, an altercation breaks out at the table beside them. it is soon quelled by Bar-Fly staff. Mike Myster, one ofthe bouncers, then accuses Sam of starting the ght and demands that he leave. When Sam protests his innocence, Mike begins to gesture wildly very close to Sam's face. He then grabs Sam by his shirt collar and throws him from the premises with such force that Sam suffers serious spinal injuries. While all this is going on, one of Sam's friends, Hank Handy, goes into the men's room and slips on spilt beer that has been accumulating for hours. He lands hard and breaks his arm.
