Brand managers for two laundry detergent brands (identified as Brands A & B) are both claiming that their brand does the best job of removing stains. Unfortunately, the two companies used different tests to support their claims. Both brand managers have agreed to accept the results of a study designed by an independent third party. The lab technician responsible for the testing contacted you to design and run the appropriate analysis. Your Design: A number of different stains will be applied to a variety of different materials. a. Study Design: 1. Each stain was applied at random to a piece of material type. Note: each test piece was assigned a number for tracking purposes (Obs. 1, Obs. 2, etc.) so that the scores for the Brand A stain remover and for the Brand B stain remover could be tracked specifically by each Piece of Material and Type of Stain applied. 2. Each piece of material was then divided into two halves for testing. The Brand A detergent was applied to one half of each Observation and the Brand B detergent was applied to the other half of each Observation. 3. Cleaning scores for each specific combination of material and stain were recorded for the Brand A stain remover and also for the Brand B stain remover. These scores are labeled SS_A (results for Brand A) and SS_B (results for Brand B). See Case #2 Data for actual data. Note: a lower score indicates a cleaner result. That is, the stain remover with the lower score is more effective in removing the stain. Requirements: 1. Complete all preliminary steps of the SSP. What CL do you recommend for the test? Be sure to discuss the reason for your recommendation. 2. Analyze the data and report your statistical results to your client (the lab technician). Were the results statistically significant? 4. Discuss your findings and conclusions. Based on your findings, do you think one brand is clearly better than the other? 5. Finally, what would you tell the marketing managers for each brand? Can either brand manager advertise that his/her brand is the best at removing stains?
