MY CASE STUDY Modern Tech Industries, Inc. is a company dedicated to the manufacture= sale, and distribution of microchips used in communication systems, automobiles, and household appliances. Its latest product Micro-Fast will have gained a signicant competitive advantage in the competitive world of technology. Their motto "making life easier at an affordable cost" has proved an attractive hook for your target market. Its main product is the ELIh'I'i:r IShip= which generates the majority of the company's income. This product has been around for several years now and its growth potential is somewhat limited. However, the Research and Development MD) department created the new Micro-Fast product which holds great promise particularly in new markets. Senior managers have all their condence in the boost that this new product can give to the sales and prots of the company. I. 111. IV. Arturo Gonzalez (man, 4-0 years old, MBA). He served as a Customer Service Supervisor for 19 years since he started in the company and is now an Administrative Support Manager covering the areas of customer service and technical support. He has always been known for his people skills and for motivating and encouraging his subordinates. in addition, he has served as a liaison with personnel om other functional units of the company and has been recognized as a distinguished employee on two occasions. Some think that it is "too cute'I and that it is "supercial" and does not have "depth". These criticisms have not prevented him from continuing in his current position. Laura Montalvo (woman, 35 years old= EBA). She is a dynamic woman with wellformed positions. She did not want to study beyond high school as she got a job in her specialty area in marketing quickly alter graduation. After several managerial positions in other companies, she came to Modern Tech Industries and within a few years she was promoted to Marketing Manager. In her position she has worked with all the products. Its strong?I IQuick and accurate decision-making in most cases. Handle conicts with some speed preventing them from transcending. Its main weakness? Likes to work alone. Understand that you can have better results than consulting with others. Her impulsiveness has created unnecessary tension in the work teams to which she has belonged because she tends to make decisions without consulting and then explain her rationale. Does not know how to work in teams but achieves results. Manuel Melendez (man, 45 years old, MBA]. He is a very strict employee with his employees and with himself. Think that to be productive you have to dedicate long hours of work to it. He does not tolerate mediocrity and is easily irritated iftbings do not go as planned. Is success in the company is based on the ability he has shown 1n obtaining valuable information from his immediate environment, translating these efforts into results. His colleagues consider him a "workaholic" and that he deprives himselfa lot of his personal life for the business and they do not see it as healthy behavior. At times he looks stressed and tired. Raul Labrador (man, 52 years old, MBA). He is a man of excellent treatment and very considerate of others. Some do not recognize him as much intellectual maturity, but his excellent human treatment of others distinguishes him om other managers in the V. VH. company. His stay at the company has been somewhat irregular. He had 5 months of leave for a work injury. Upon returng, he became involved in one of the impact projects in the company and managed to work harmoniously with the group. However, his contribution was somewhat limited as he had a fall at home that put him out of work for an additional 2 months. Raul is very diligent, upright, and helpful but has earned a reputation for being very accident prone. He takes it as a joke and indicates that they can count on him. Paul Matthews (man, 33, EBA}. Paul was born in Boston, Massachusetts and is the yotmgest on the company's management team. He had married at an early age but is currently divorced. Paul is a very prepared, dynamic= and reliable person. The company's products are known "from A to Z". He always works overtime and is out late at night most of the time. He has demonstrated, at his young age, that he knows how different parts of the company affect each other and recognizes how the company is inuenced by social, economic, and competitive issues. Paul has not been able to continue moving up the company because he does not have the necessary years of seniority. Before he is promoted, the CED must consider Arturo Gonzalez or Andrea Laracuente, who have been working for the company longer. Paul is undecided as to whether or not he wants to wait for that to happen. Meanwhile, he contimres working because he likes what he does very much. Andrea Laracuente (female, 42 years old, MBA}. Andrea is a strong-willed and very ambitious woman. Precisely her character and determination have made her shine in her professional performance. Her leadership is based on trust but if one of her employees lls, she removes her immediately because she always wants to guarantee the quality of the results. She knows that she is "on duty\" to be promoted. Therefore, she always plays her cards very cleverly thinking that she can occupy a higher position in the hierarchy of the company. Her leadership style is autocratic, so she likes to make her own decisions. Some of her employees who are in charge have said they are afraid of her but also acknowledge that she achieves results. It is common to hear her say "if only I were more exible ...". Angel Mendoza (man, as years old, MS}. Angel has never missed his job since he was recruited 3 years ago. A scientist by profession, he is well structured and reserved. At times, the CED has pointed out that he should be less reserved. His written contributions are excellent but his dealings with others are poor. Some think that he is shy, others that he is arrogant, others do not know how to qualify his way of being. What cannot be denied is that his work has been impeccable and that his contribution to the business has been very good. He does not appear to have much additional knowledge to the scientists and has been criticized for not engaging more with his employees. Angel is motivated by his work and it seems as if he does not know about the administration. However, you have achieved acceptable results in your time as a manager. In this case, you will be able to evaluate the managerial attitudes and skills of various employees, which could make them optimal candidates for their integration into key leadership positions in the company where they work. After you read the case, answer the questions below. 1) Assess the personalities and competencies of the current board members listed in the case. Identify the skills each of these employees has based on: a. Mintzberg's managerial functions discussed in chapter 1 of the textbook. b. The skills that companies look for in managers (interpersonal, technical, and conceptual skills). 2) Of the seven members, select six to occupy leadership positions under the new structure proposed in the case. Justify why you selected these employees. What managerial skills stand out in each of these? 3) Divide the six chosen employees into two groups: Name the three members for the EMV Chip product. What ideal characteristics do these members have to belong to this group? . Name three members for the group that will manage the Micro-Fast product. What ideal characteristics do these members have to belong to this group? Identify one person from each of these groups to be the group leader. Justify your selection. . Name the employee, of the original 7, that you left without any position. Why did you make this determination? Do you lack any managerial skills? What managerial skills would have helped you belong to one of the other groups? 4) Conclude the analysis of this case by explaining the importance of being a well- prepared manager with the correct skills to assume the responsibilities that a job position you occupy brings
