This study aimed to investigate the effects of heat treatments of steel on the microstructure and hardness of steel. For this purpose, three types of steel were studied: type A (AISI 1020), type B (AISI 1040), and type C (AISI 1020). The steel samples were heat-treated at 1250K for 4h and subsequently were cooled at three different rates, 1) water quenched, 2) air-cooled at room condition, 3) furnace-cooled at furnace condition where the temperature was lowered at a very low rate. Table 1 shows the chemical composition of different steel types. Table 1 . The chemical composition of steels. Figure 1 shows the structure of original steel samples under a microscope with a scaling of 100 m. Figure 2 shows the microstructure of steel samples cooled at different rates. Table 2 lists the percentage of different phases after heat treatment. Finally, the hardness of samples was measured and listed in Table 3. Content of report: Write a 1-page to 2-page report to discuss the effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and hardness of steel types. Please study Chapter 13 about Ferrous Alloys. In your study explain the TTT and CCT Diagrams, and the path in which the heat-treated steel reached a phase composition listed in Table 2. Comment on the grain size in relation to the carbon content and cooling curves. How the grain size affects the hardness of steel samples.
