He arrives on campus several days before classes begin and learns of a party scheduled at Tau Phi Gamma Fraternity on Friday evening. Dan arrives at the party, confident that a university education means more much more than mere academics. Beer is served at the party, and that night, Dan consumes some alcohol. Dan is distracted while socializing with the Tau Phi fraternity brothers, and someone takes his checkbook out of his back pocket. Three days later, Dan realizes he is missing his checkbook. He returns to the fraternity to look for his checkbook, but to no avail. He hurries to his bank on University Avenue and learns that one check has been written on his account for $3,500 to University Stereo Shack. This check was not written by Dan. Dan's remaining checking account balance is $5.83. CASE 4: Sophie agreed to mow Reza's yard once a week for $50 per week throughout the summer. Sophie, however, was having trouble getting paid from Reza. On July 1, Reza, gave Sophie a handwritten note stating "I, Reza Salehi, owe Sophie Smith $50." On July 7, once again Reza did not have the money to pay Sophie what he owed her, so he again gave her a handwritten note stating: "I, Reza Salehi, promise to pay Sophie Smith or to bearer, the sum of $100 on Monday, July 22, 2022." Disgusted with Reza, Sophie assigned both handwritten notes to Vince, in payment of a debt. When Vince presented the documents to Reza on July 22, Reza refused to pay.
