Case Description:

The FitPet Veterinary Surgeons Practice Clinic is situated in a west coast Canadian city. It employs several veterinary surgeons (vets). Its clients are owners of domestic animals such as cats, dogs, caged birds, and so on. Some of the vets are specialists in particular types of animal (e.g., one is an expert in treating reptiles kept as pets) while others do not have a particular specialty but can treat most types of animals. Some owners register their pet when they first need treatment; others register them when they acquire the pet, in advance of them ever needing to see a vet. When owner registers their pets, the admin assistant records details, issues an owner number and pet number, and registers them in the National Registrar if they do not have a record there. When an owner wants their pet to be seen by a vet, they bring them to the clinic. Appointments are made in advance. If an owner is bringing two or more animals to the clinic, each is treated as a separate appointment. When owner phones to make an appointment, the admin assistant checks the schedule, assigns a vet, and confirms the date and time of the appointment. After the appointment, it is noted whether the pet attended (some owners make an appointment and then either cancel it or do not show up e.g., because they cannot catch their cat or because the animal appears to be better). The clinic wants to be able to identify owners who regularly make appointments that they do not keep. The clinic, in association with an insurance company, offers an insurance plan for pet owners. Pet owners can request information on insurance and choose a plan they want. When the owner brings the pet to see the vet, the vet makes an assessment of the treatment that needs to be given and if any operations are needed. The admin assistant then checks to see if the needed drugs are available. Once the vet has treated the pet, he/she logs the treatment in the pets file. The admin assistant asks the clinic manager for the cost of a treatment or operation and makes out an invoice which is then sent to pet owner or the insurance company if the owner has an insurance plan. Every 3 months, the clinic manager produces a statement for the clinic owner and the insurance company. Currently, everything in the clinic is performed manually. As the clinic is growing and expanding, the clinic manager found it impossible to continue this way and would like to have a computerbased FitPet Comm 436 Final Exam, April 2017 Page 1 of 2 Veterinary Practice System. The purpose of the system is to handle and record all the information of the pet owners, pets, treatment required, payment of bills, details of insurance plans, and to record appointments and to highlight cancelled and missed appointments.

Questions

Based on the above description, answer the following questions. Please state your assumptions or any information that you find is missing.

Q1. (10%) Provide a work system snapshot for the FitPet Veterinary Practice System there is no need to specify technology, environment, strategies, and infrastructure.

Q2. (12%) Describe things you need to do, in order not to violate any of the seven Steve Alter temptations, before designing and developing OR finding an offtheshelf software for this computerbased FitPet Veterinary Practice system. Please make sure that you do not just copy from the textbook; your answer has to be relevant and specific to this FitPet clinic.

Q3. (8%) Explain the major differences between nonfunctional requirements and constraints. Provide two examples each from the FitPet case to illustrate the differences.

Q4. (8%) Propose two alternatives for the FitPet Veterinary Practice system and provide 3 criteria to evaluate and pick one of them. Q5. (7%) Draw a causal loop showing the effect of the number of missed/cancel appointments and clinic income if the clinic implements a penalty charge for pet owners if they missed/cancel their appointments. Use the causal loop to explain why it is a good idea or not a good idea to implement the penalty and under what condition to charge more and what condition to charge less. Note: from the clinics point of view, there is no difference between missed and cancel appointments.

Q6. (9%) Draw a UML Use Case Diagram for the FitPet Veterinary Practice system. Your diagram should have at least 4 use cases and at least one <> and one <>.

Q7. (15%) Draw a level 0 Data Flow Diagram (about 57 processes should suffice) for the FitPet Veterinary Practice system. Please ensure that your diagram is consistent with your UML Use Case diagram in question Q6 above.

Q8. (10%) Assume you already have the owner and pet registration process. Draw an EPC diagram for making an appointment.

Q9. (15%) (i) Draw a R2M diagram for the FitPet Veterinary Practice system. Your diagram has to have at least at least 3 internal roles, but you only needs to show external and internal roles, services, requests, and responses; you are not required to represent the associations of services, requests, and responses. (ii) Draw an R2M diagram showing the decomposition of one of the roles in (i) into two or more roles.

Q10.(6%) Given your answer to questions Q5 Q9, which diagram would you use when communicating with the clinic manager and which diagram when communicating with software vendors, and why?
