When Katarina, a 22-year-old did well in her job interview, the manager (Gary) of KompuSoft, an Australian company that has a niche market in the design of training DVDs offered her (Katarina) a job immediately. Katarina, who needed this job, was so happy and accepted the offer straight away. When she reported to the workplace the following week, she found that she was to share an office with a single male colleague (Kevin) who appeared to be invading her personal space inappropriately. Her manager, Gary had placed her with Kevin, as both of them would be working on the same projects and could help and learn from each other. Katarina was not happy with this arrangement as she felt uncomfortable being in complete isolation with Kevin. Katarina's husband was also upset following her description of Kevin's behaviour and threatened to stop Katarina working at KompuSoft immediately. Katarina decides to approach her manager Gary about working with Kevin and explains that if a solution can be found immediately she will have to resign and report the matter to FairWork. Gary instructs Katarina to lodge a formal complaint about Kevin, but in the meantime advises Katarina to "just get on" with her work.
What professional ethical dilemmas are Katarina, Gary, and Kevin dealing with here? (e.g. Should we sanction Kevin or Gary's behaviour, or both? What are the public interest questions raised by this scenario? What actions do everyone involved need to take to ensure that this kind of situation does not occur again?)
