Case Study: Campus Recreation

As offered by Hums & MacLean (page 170), consider that you are the newly hired Assistant Director of Campus Recreation at Big State University, your first assignment is to upgrade program offerings in your new facility. You have the following facilities:

(1) gymbig enough for eight basketball courts

(1) pool measuring 25 meters

(1) cardiovascular room with treadmills and stationary bikes

(1) weight room with free weights and a weight-machine system

(2) activity rooms with 10-foot ceilings

(4) multipurpose grass fields

Your student body enrollment of 18,000 includes many nontraditional students, and residence halls coexist with fraternities and sororities on campus.

Consider the following questions:

1. What programs would you set up? What times would you schedule activities for? Leagues versus tournaments? How would you decide which activities to drop and which to add?

2. How would you go about getting funding for your programs? Whom would you ask?

5. Your programs must meet local and national standards. Which organizations would you join, and how would you go about ensuring that your programming reflected the best practices around the country?
