Scenario

You are a project manager for a highly respected firm providing project managers nationwide. Your boss calls you in asking for you to take over a project to renovate a section of the Golden Plaza Hotel in Dallas. The previous manager was hired with little to no experience in project management and was removed as the PM. The project is two weeks behind schedule. Your project team consists of the following:

  • Project Manager - You
  • Asst. Project Manager
  • Logistics/Procurement
  • Design Team
  • Construction Group
  • Electrician Group
  • IT group
  • Housekeeping/Maintenance
  • Quality Assurance/Inspection Group

A small team from your firm was sent to conduct a short analysis and this is the information you are being provided. Your project team consists of 50 members. Approximately 50% of the workers are subcontracted through other agencies and businesses. You have twenty members including 2 sponsors directly from the hotel. Many of the members are complaining of lack of communication. They also complaining some of the members from the hotel are telling them to change work schedules and add work details Some of the team members believe they cannot work on the team due to commitments to their full job. There have been no meetings since the kick-off. Most members are citing over commitments and family obligations. Half of the construction group do not speak English and do not understand some of the requirements needed to complete the project. Your boss informs you to get the project back on schedule and improve the performance of all project members. She informs you will have three days of downtime to assess and prepare to move forward with the project.
