Challenges in pursuit of CCFTA

The inherent incompatibilities between the Canadian and Chinese trade systems have also been used to point out how a FTA between these countries would spell trouble.

Canada is open to free-trade and has minimal restrictions in place while China is said to be a "command economy" which is allegedly dominated by state-owned enterprises (Chen, 2019, p. 4)

Canada has a relatively high ranking in terms of openness in the ETI rankings (24) while China is noted to be on the lower end with a ranking of 61 ("The Global Enabling Trade Report 2016", 2016)

Chen (2018), argued that these differences in openness and control will lead to problems in establishing successful trade relationship between Canada and China.

From the previous slides, it is clear than China is on its way to opening its economy. Though the changes may be slight, they are in the right direction.

Furthermore, Singapore which is ranked 1 in ETI ranking has a flourishing trade relationship with China, with China being its largest trading partner and Singapore being the top investor in China ("Why China?", n.d.). This should not be possible according to Chen (2018)

China's move towards opening up its market will loosen up incompatibility issues pointed out by Chen (2018) that might occur in CCTFA
