Chi-square has two uses - the goodness of fit test, and the test of independence. The latter provides insight to the relationship between categorical variables. Unlike Pearson's r, and other measures of correlation, chi-square does not require the variables to be continuous. After all, just because two variables are categorical does not mean they can't be correlated.

Create an Example

For this discussion, you will create an example to which the chi-square test of independence could be applied. Develop a main response in which you address the following:

  • Identify two categorical variables for which a chi-square test of independence could be conducted.
  • Describe the categories of each.
  • Explain why these would be appropriate for this test.
  • Predict whether or not the chi-square test result would be significant, and what this would imply about the variables.
