Chloro-benzene is manufactured by reacting dry chlorine with benzenolchid, using ferric chloride as a catalyst. There are two reactions where mono and di-claro-benzene forms:

C6H5 + Cl2 = C5H5Cl + HCl

C6H5Cl + Cl2 = C6H4Cl2 + HCl

The 90% of benzene forms mono-claro-benzene and 15% of this reacts to form di-cioro- benzene. Chlorine is supplied in 20% excess of that required for monochlorination. Eihci and excess C2 leave the reactor as gases. The liquid product obtained contains unreacted benzene, mono and di-chloro-benzene. Based on 100 lb of benzene fed, calculate: (a) The mass and composition of the liquid product; (b) The mass and composition of the gases leaving the reactor.

The right answers are:

C6H6=6.86%

C6H5Cl=75.69%

C6H4Cl2=17.45%

Total= 145.77 lb

HCl=76.33%

Cl2=23.67%

Total=63.4 lb
