Use the Circuit Construction Kit: DC - Start on the Torque tab with the default settings

V=IR

P=VI

  1. In the top right box check all three boxes to show current, labels, and values. Keep wire resistivity at tiny and battery resistance at 0. Let's start by building a basic circuit. Grab two wires from the left, a battery, the light bulb, and a switch. Assemble a circuit. Take a picture of your screen and insert it below.
  2. Calculate the current and the power in the circuit.
  3. Click on the switch. What happens when you open the switch?
  4. Explore changes in voltage and resistance. Close the switch. Click on the battery and increase the voltage to 120V. Describe what happens and calculate the new current and power output. Then click on the light bulb and increase resistance. Describe what happens below.
  5. Return the resistance of the bulb to 10.0?. Grab a 10.0? resistor from the left and insert it in the circuit. There are now two resistances connected in series. Calculate the current in the circuit. Show your work. Not sure how to do that with two resistances in the circuit? Grab the ammeter on the right and insert it in your circuit. This will give you the current travelling through the circuit. Use that to help you figure out how to calcaulate the current in the circuit with two forms of resistance. Describe how to do it and give the total current below.
  6. Remove the resistor from the circuit. Keep the batter at 120V and the light bulb at 10.0?. Attach an ammeter to the circuit if you have not done so already. Scroll down through the items on the left. Some items have a large resistance and some have a small resistance. In the table below make a prediction for what will happen when you insert each item in your circuit, then insert it and record your observations. Use the ammeter and voltmeter to obtain your current and voltage so you do not have to calculate it by hand each time. Make sure you insert the item before the light bulb in a position that allows you to record your voltage on either side of the bulb after the current has flowed through the item.

7. Remove the battery and replace it with the high voltage battery in the list of items. The circuit should now have a battery set to 100,000V, two wires, a switch, and the light bulb with a resistance of 10.0?. Describe what happens when the switch is closed and current flows through the circuit.

8. Now insert a fuse in the circuit and describe what happens.

9. Now we are going to make a parallel circuit. Start with a simple circuit including a battery, a light bulb, wires, and the ammeter, as shown below.
