The employment structure shows how the labour force is divided between the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors. Different countries have different employment structures. The employment structure of a given country can tell you quite a lot about its economy.For example, in the richest countries, there will usually be more people working in the tertiary sector than in the primary and secondary sectors. There tend to be more people working in the primary sector in the poorest countries than in either the secondary or tertiary sectors.

The 21st Century Tertiary Sector

Some people now describe the economy as having a quaternary sector consisting of information services such as computing, ICT (information and communication technologies), consultancy (offering advice to business) and R & D (research and development, particularly in scientific fields). Broader definitions add the news media, libraries, universities and colleges, and other intellectual activities, including culture.

In recent decades, hi-tech industries have fueled the growth of the quaternary sector.Silicon Valley, to the southeast of San Francisco in the US state of California, is a key location for global hi-tech companies. Hi-tech describes industries and companies that are involved in advanced, modern, cutting edge technology.
