Consider the following Case Study and respond to the questions posed:

Carlos, a 14 year-old Latino boy, has been brought to counselling by his mother. She shares that Carlos' appetite has decreased, he is not sleeping and appears very tired and fatigued. Likewise, Carlos' grade 8 teachers have expressed concern that he is becoming withdrawn, uninterested in schoolwork and has been late for numerous classes; he is failing 3 of his required subjects. Carlos received 2 detentions in the past 3 months for excessive tardiness and not completing assignments. If Carlos does not change his behavior, his promotion to ninth grade might be in jeopardy. Carlos' mother works, and his father works 2 jobs to help make ends meet. Carlos' mother expressed that he would have to quit basketball so that he can take care of his younger sister at night while his parents are at work.

Questions:

1) What are some of the social factors interfering with Carlos' ability to achieve at school?

2) In your role as counsellor, how might you work with him and collaborate with his family and school to support his development and achievement in school?
