General Instructions Read the Case Description below. Once you understand the case start formulating your entities and attributes. You can draw these out on paper as a rough draft and then transfer them to LucidChart. There is a template in LucidChart that you can use for this assignment if you want. You can also create a brand new file and select the ERD template. Decide on a primary key for each entity. Determine how your entities relate to one another and draw the relationship lines. If there is something about the case that needs further explanation, please post your questions in the weekly discussion forum. Case Description The owner of Michigan River Trips, Edward, needs a database. He has 4 locations throughout Michigan whereby he rents kayaks, life jackets, helmets and other kayaking equipment to people who want to kayak in Michigans great rivers. He also offers chaperoned trips where a customer can purchase the trip and have guides, equipment and lunch provided. The Pictured Rocks day trip is the most popular. With this trip the customer and their party, kayak along the Pictured Rocks in Munising, Michigan. When they are done, which is approximately at noon, they are served lunch on the beach where they began their trip. No matter if the customer is purchasing a planned trip, like the one along the Pictured Rocks, or just renting gear, the number of people in the party must be known so that the exact number of kayaks and other equipment can be reserved. Michigan River Trips or MRT only has a certain number of kayaks at each location. They dont want to book a trip without having enough kayaks or life jackets. Additionally, at least one customer must be associated with the trip. Not all customers will book trips. The employee who booked the trip is also notated. Not all employees will book trips. Finally, each person renting a kayak needs to fill out a waiver and Edward wants to notate if the person renting a kayak or going on a trip is under 18. Not all people listed in the database will rent equipment or go on trips. As mentioned, at the time of booking, equipment must be reserved for the trip. Not all equipment will be used on trips. Information such as the name of the equipment, the description, who the manufacturer is, when that equipment was purchased and when it was retired also needs to be maintained by this database. Additionally, at least one Participant needs to be associated with a trip. Some trips require chaperones, while others do not. There can be more than one chaperone per trip and not all employees will serve as chaperones. In addition to the Pictured Rocks trips, Edward also offers other trip packages. For instance, in the fall he puts together a chaperoned trip down the AuSable. This trip includes all equipment, lunch, transportation and a barbeque dinner at the end of the trip. Edward would like to communize the naming of the trips so that he can determine which trips are the most popular. Below is a copy of the spreadsheet Edward is currently using to reserve and book trips. He would like to know which river rents the most equipment. Also, he would like to know what his weekly, quarterly and monthly sales are. Finally, for planned trips, he needs to know who hasnt filled out a waiver yet. Finishing Up 1) Now that you have read the case, start composing your entities and the attributes. 2) Assign a primary key to each entity. 3) Determine which entities relate to one another and place your foreign keys appropriately. 4) Determine the type of relationship between your entities and draw those in. 5) Read the rubric to make sure you have included everything. Go back and double check your model. Make sure all many to many relationships are properly broken down to one to many. Make youre your attributes are attributes and not data. 6) This diagram needs to be readable. What do I mean by readable? The normal lay person should be able to understand what you are trying to do. Are you lines convoluted? Is it hard to trace how one entity relates to the other? Have you adequately described each entity? Does the diagram fit on one page? Does your diagram have your name on it? 7) Make sure your diagram can fit on one page. Export your LucidChart file to a PDF and upload it to Canvas. 8) Points will be deducted for models that are sloppy, do not have a name on them or do not fit on one page.
