County governments are arguably an anachronism $-$ they were created to provide important state$-$related services when transportation and communication technologies meant it was hard to provide and manage those services at a geographic distance. Given that, should county governments be eliminated and replaced with a more state$-$centralized version of local government? Why or why not? What would the advantages and disadvantages be of eliminating county government?
